•   Culturally developed;
•   Linked to values;
•   Formed early in life;
•   Resistant to change;
•   Difficult to measure.
What do beliefs affect in a teacher?

•Behavior;

•Lesson planning;

•Attitudes and values towards learning;

•“…subsequent thinking and information
processing, reshaping, distorting and
redifining” them. (Nespor 1987.)
Teachers’ beliefs
The language teacher should:

         -show self-confidence;

-respect learners to express themselves;

    -create the learning atmosphere;

-consider cognitive and affective aspects.

Reflective cases
Think of teachers you have had. Comment with
  their beliefs towards learners. Describe
  situations in which the class was seen as:
• resisters;
• receptacles;
• raw material;
• Clients;
• individual explorers;
• democratic explorers.
